When a motorcycle is frequently ridden on gravel, unpaved roads, or more challenging routes, the position of the exhaust system can be relevant. A higher-positioned exhaust system can increase ground clearance and make the exhaust less exposed in tip-overs or when contacting obstacles.
If the original exhaust conflicts with the desired luggage system or leaves little room, an exhaust system positioned differently may be a possible solution. High-mounted exhaust systems are used, among other things, to position the muffler higher and thereby create additional clearance for certain luggage configurations.
A different exhaust position can reduce the risk of certain types of damage if the muffler rests less directly on the ground during a tip-over. However, it does not provide complete protection against damage from falls. The surface, direction of the fall, and motorcycle design also affect the outcome.
